Your Notice

Your Notice

Q. Why is my assessment notice is different this year?

A. We redesigned your assessment notice this year as a response to requests to make the notice easier to read and clearer. We consulted with a variety of groups, including taxpayers and municipalities. And have received positive feedback on the design. The other reason for the change is because we are now the Property Valuation Services Corporation (PVSC) and we were planning to make changes in the notice to reflect the new organization.

Q. What do I do with my assessment notice in January?

A. . It is not necessary for you to do anything with your assessment notice. If, however, you believe the assessed value is not a reasonable estimate of market value as of the date it’s based on, you do have the option to appeal the assessment. 2009 property assessments are based on market value at January 1, 2007. We encourage you to talk to an assessor before you appeal to answer your questions. You can contact us at 1-800 380-7775. If you still wish to appeal, follow the instructions on your assessment notice. The appeal must be received in our office within 21 days of the date of service on your notice. Please note that only your market value assessment can be appealed.

Q. I appealed my assessment last year. Is the change reflected in this year's assessment?

A. Your assessment is based upon market value data at a specific base date. Your assessment is re-calculated using market value data as of a new base date every year. 2009 assessments are based on market value at January 1, 2007. Your 2008 assessment was based on market value at January 1st, 2006. If you would like more information on how your appealed assessment in 2008 relates to your 2009 assessment, please contact us at 1-800 380-7775. Our staff will be happy to assist you.
